When you come back from a farm with well over 1 pound of basil, I don’t think you have any choice but to make pesto. Have a go at this grain-free recipe for gnocchi that can be made with parsnips or traditional potatoes.
I had the hardest time figuring out what to call these. It's as if I had all the means for chicken tacos except for the tortillas.
Summer means basil, lots of it. The bright flavors of pesto make a sensational addition to the weekly meal prep of tuna salad.
Salad you can eat with your hands! Also included is some info on the amazing powers incorporating horseradish root into your diet, especially when sick, can have.
The scarcity of produce is slowly coming to an end. As our environment warms up again with spring, it's time to reintroduce some seasonal fruits and raw lettuces.
breakfast
Cooking for two when only one person has dietary restrictions (aka, me) brings its challenges. I’m always looking to make the food we eat taste like its without compromise. These grain-free waffles made the cut on texture and taste.
Waffles are a weekend novelty breakfast, and we are breakfast people through-and-through. Hope you give these a try this holiday weekend.
This is kind of an un-recipe. Actually, everything I make is an un-recipe but I have to remeasure everything the second time I make it when I want to publish a recipe. Cooking by eye and instinct is where my creativity lives (I went to art school for undergrad incase you didn’t know, hah). That said, cater this breakfast bowl to how you feel.
Don’t get me wrong, I still love eggs for breakfast but eight months of eggs being one of the only foods I didn’t get sick from has me wanting anything but eggs. Listening to my intuition and making more variety-driven bowls for breakfast with carbs has been sensational.
Vegetables! In pancakes!
It has been almost 6 weeks since I’ve had a true complex carbohydrate. I almost got emotional being able to eat something as boring as squash without violently breaking out into painful red patches around my eyes, arms, hands, and legs. It was only 2 pancakes of the stack, but it might as well have been the biggest event yet of my journey to killing off candida overgrowth.
I finally stopped eye-balling my sprouted overnight oat recipe and came to conclusive measurements. Perfect for meal prep to save time on a nourishing and satiating meal with a dollop of blueberry chia jam to top it off.
Get in an easy serving of cruciferous vegetables for breakfast with an easy stovetop porridge recipe.
snacks
Snacking seems to be where people in my practice slip the most often in achieving their health goals. One chip turns into a whole bag. A cookie turns into three. Sugar cravings are unbearable. I hear ya, people!
So this year as I dive more into the recipes that people in my practice ask for, I’m looking to create better snack options. Truthfully, most snacks from the grocery store (think of an energy bar, for example) are highly processed. And the better the quality, the more expensive they become.
Crackers that you can feel good snacking on. Made with just a few nutrient-dense ingredients, these might be my favorite road trip food to pack.
I've been working on this recipe for months. There have been total failures that stuck to parchment paper, burnt batches, soggy batches, etc.. Yet with perseverance, these have come to be. I was originally working off of my recipe for cauliflower pizza crust but it took an overhaul to get the crackers right.
Of the innumerable quirks I can name about myself, craving salt as soon as I eat something sweet is one of them. This salty + sweet sprouted granola is the best of both.
Sprouted hummus is life's glue. For my life, at least. Spread this on everything in your weekly meal prep or snack on it with a spoon.
Satiating, portable snacks made from functional foods. Say hello to the *new and improved* carrot cake fat ball recipe.
How to get your family to embrace vegetables at this year’s feast? Bacon. I personally can’t imagine anyone turning down a vegetable dish that contains bacon. Bok choy, a relatively watery vegetable, gets new life with the addition of bacon and some bright lemon in this side dish.
There’s a big emotional adjustment in switching how we eat. A virtually starch- and carb-free lifestyle these days certainly challenges my creativity.
Mashed cauliflower, while perhaps not as filling as mashed potato, is still rich and delicious. I’ve used my favorite brand of ghee from Farm True, full-fat coconut milk, and ample seasoning to give this otherwise mild vegetable a creamy mouthfeel.
Today we’re celebrating a week since surgery and the addition of solid foods, anti-inflammatory care, and summer produce.
Lighten up with fries and guac made from a crunchy and fibrous root vegetable called jicama.
Fries before guys. But anywho, homemade sweet potato fries are unbelievably easy to make any night of the week or as part of meal prep for the week.
The perfect side dish in the late fall and dead of winter comes as a big serving of romanesco. If you're not familiar with romanesco, it's part of the brassica family (a cruciferous vegetable) and tastes rather like a piece of cauliflower. It has an attractive form and color as it's swirled in fractals and a gleams bright green and yellow hues. Being that romanesco is a cruciferous vegetable, it's best to eat cooked. Raw cruciferous vegetables contain goitrogens, which are substances that block the uptake of iodine in the thyroid gland. In turn, this interrupts thyroid hormone production.

One of the most popular recipes on the site is my gluten-free banana bread. It contains a little bit of oat flour (a gluten-free grain), but I think the demand for grain-free recipes is going. Paleo, keto, and Whole30 diets used to control blood sugar, manage GI conditions, autoimmune disease reversal, and weight loss are on the rise.
This bread has 1 kind of flour, uses natural sugar from ripe bananas, and the crunch topping is a texture to die for.
My favorite procrastination activity has always been baking, procrastabaking if you will. The kitchen is my favorite place of creative outlet. When I need time to decompress, you can usually find me putzing in the kitchen.
Pulling on some of the principles of the therapeutic GAPS diet, I’ve developed an easily digestible bread loaf. 4 ingredients, 50-ish minutes in the oven, and boom… grain-free bread. Coconut butter is less fibrous than coconut flour, making this bread ideal for those who need to work on digestive complications.
A shortbread cookie free of nuts, grains, and sugar. Delicate vanilla flavor, texture of a traditional shortbread, and a satisfying glaze on top made from coconut butter. And as a bonus, I give a brief rundown of my thoughts on grain-free and ketogenic diets.
I considered zucchini bread a health food before I became educated enough to give a damn about nutrition. Thank the heavens I figured out how to actually make it healthy down the road.
The taste of summer citrus in a grain free loaf, sweetened with just a touch of raw honey and super satiating with healthy fats. More on food sensitivities, and how I restored my gut lining that allows me to eat lemons again.
Here we are again sneaking vegetables into baked goods. This grain free loaf is packed with wholesome ingredients with only a hint of sweetness.
Taking a classic cookie and freeing it from grains and refined sugar. Soft and chewy at the center, crisp at the edges.
Perhaps the world's most perfect loaf of banana bread, sweetened only with bananas and full of healthy sources of fat.

As a functional nutritionist, I have to refrain from cringing when someone says the word superfood. Too often this title gets misinterpreted and smacked onto foods as a marketing tool when it shouldn’t be.
The way food is marketed at the public, a belief has been created that certain foods make us lose weight or will cure conditions and diseases. I’m here to tell you that it’s a blatant lie.
are you absorbing the nutrients in your food?
To accompany the eating content of my upcoming book, The Hormone Solutions, I’m finally sharing the document I use in practice that guides the process of soaking and spouting. Grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds are nutrient-dense foods that contribute to optimal health when properly prepared. Proper preparation of these foods includes methods of soaking, sprouting, fermenting, and natural leavening.
Meet aioli, the queen of easy sauces to put on your vegetables, meats, or even to use as a dip from crudité to plantain chips.
Did you know that even the fancy, gourmet peanut butter you buy at the store contains a dangerous mold called aflatoxin?
Skip the jar and make your own using safe, organic, valencia peanuts.
As the cooler weather sets in, save the carcass or bones from your next meat roast to make stock. Not only is this sustainable, it saves money and yields quarts you can freeze for later use.
The taste of a stock and a bone broth are fairly similar, making it difficult to discern difference. However, the nutrient profiles of each are most definitely different based on how each is prepared. So we’re going to look at what meat stock is as well as how it’s different than broth.
Follow this guide to make butter out of any nut or seed but I particularly like taste and omega fatty acid profile of raw pistachios. Almonds might be ubiquitous, but nuts and seeds can be inflammatory because of their relative omega-6:omega-3 fatty acid ratio.
The go-to guide for making pesto out of any green or herb. While basil is a classic, some of my other favorite greens to use during the summer months are arugula and parsley.
Fries before guys. But anywho, homemade sweet potato fries are unbelievably easy to make any night of the week or as part of meal prep for the week.
Ditch beans in a can, ditch the digestive upset. This guide right here will walk you through preparing dried beans for optimal digestion and nutrition.
Turkey breast isn’t inherently the most flavorful animal protein because of how lean it is. This is where seasoning and cooking method come into play. Turkey burgers can be real dry and crumbly or moist and tender. I found the key making the latter type of turkey burger at home.
